| How does it work? The Determinator works by trapping larger tumblers and by passing smaller ones. a 4 dpeth cut in a key has a tumbler that is much larger than a 1 depth cut. The determinator is designed to trap the larger tumblers in a specially designed cut tip on the key. A small lenth of spring steel with a sloped end is inserted in the cut out portion of the Determinator to release any trapped tumbler. |
|
| A Shown is a lock with various sized tumbers and a determinator which will trap the tumblers with 3 or 4 depth but allow 1 or 2 depth to pass | ![]() |
| B When the determinator traps a tumbler look at the space number closest to face of lock. In example space 6 is trapped and therefore it is a 3 or 4 depth | |
| C Use release tool to raise trapped tumbler and pull the Determinator out until next number is visible | |
| Record depths ad spaces and key is
ready to be cut. When cutting first key there are two choices. The spaces that were trapped can be cut as 3's and those passed as 1's. Since only few cuts will be of only 1 depth they can be quickly impressioned down. The other choise is to cut a try out key with 1/2 cuts. The trapped with be 31/2 depths and the others 11/2. Use try as any other try out key . Method used is down to personal choice. Each Determinator is custom designed for a particular lock. |
